Common myths or questions people ask are the 'lock jaw' and 'bite force' myths. I'm sure you've heard the "do they snap?" question. But what about the other more arguable ones like,"Do they make good guard dogs?" or "are Pit Bulls mean?" and "Do they feel pain?" We even expose the more controversial myth that "Bullies cause the most dog attacks" as the fraud it is. There are thousands of dogs homeless because of a misinformed public. My mission is to save them.

I put a lot of time into this article to present you with the facts and references so I hope you enjoy and use them to help restore the tarnished image of our Bully Breed friends!

Intro:

Although I am now the proud owner of an adopted Pit Bull pup, as a kid I grew up hearing different legends and shocking stories and myths about everything from the scary-bad high-school in the district, the haunted house down the street, scary alien clerks in the Principle's office, the mean old geezer in the wooded home and the evil man-eating Pit Bulls and Bully Breed dogs that closely resemble alligators that live on dry land.

The stories were always intriguing and fun to listen to, harmless and innocent in their nature they served to make the hair stand up on the back of your neck ya know? Nobody cared to find out the truth, we were satisfied in our imagination.

But what happens as you get older and those mythical figures of your childhood evolve with you, unchallenged or even reinforced, into an otherwise undisturbed fact? What happens when there becomes a victim of the myth, as silent and indefensible of itself as the stories are bold and impressionable?

This is exactly the case with the Bully Breed myths; they come with wings and are sensational in their ability to fly like an airborne plague...an ambiguous infection that spreads among its listeners but draws vengeance upon itself. The facts about Pit Bulls refute the stories, no matter if it's a pure-bred pup or a mud-blood rescue dog. A Bully Breed myth may be fun conversation but it is a high-hurdle for any pup to clear and even after the facts about them are made evident their injustice lingers in the bedrock of our perception.

Years later, my own childhood stories panned out as such;

I ended up finishing my senior year at the 'scary' Freehold Boro High-School and it was my favorite one ever. Myth exposed. The house down the street wasn't haunted but when inside a friend accidentally dropped a paper with his name on it and we all got in trouble. No ghost. Myth exposed. The scary alien clerk turned out to be the mother of my 2nd-grade ''Steve Urkel'' type crush. Myth exposed. The mean old man in the wooded home was a decent guy and even let us pick fresh apples from his tree. Myth exposed.

As for the evil man-eating Bully Breed dogs, lets get to exposing the facts.

One of the biggest and most frequent Pit Bull Myths I hear is;

"THE PIT BULL LOCK JAW!"

When I was a kid I had heard the Pit-Bull lock jaw myth so many many times. It made for fun childhood conversation and even I believed it...So many people said it so it must've been true right? It wasn't until I did a search on the subject that I got the truth. How many people do you think take the time to check the facts about Bully Breeds? Not many I'd bet.

The physical bone structure of a Bully Breed rescue dog is no different than any dog breed. Their jaws have no ability to 'lock' in any sense of the word and any insinuation otherwise is just Pit Bull Bull!

The Pit Bull Lock Jaw Myth Exposed!
PROOF:Dr. I. Lerh Brisbin, Ph.D. - Senior Research Scientist with Savanna River Ecology Laboratory; University of South Carolina Professor: Expert in behavior, training, and handling of the American Pit Bull Terrier and their anatomy.

He stated that;

"Pit Bulls do not have locking jaws. Based on actual dog dissections and measurement of their skulls, the evidence demonstrated that pit bull jaw muscles and bone structure are the same as other similarly sized dog."

Pit Bull lock jaw myth exposed! But our Bully Breed friends do however have a strong will and in a game of "tug-of war" are nearly impossible to beat so if you do start a game you better have the energy and strength to finish the winner! Good-luck with that!

Unfortunately, the facts about Pits are harder to find than the myths. Lets keep moving...

"DO PIT BULLS SNAP AND TURN ON PEOPLE?"

This is a joke and its a shame anyone ever believes it, people ask me all the time, do Pit Bulls snap? I have heard about the notion that ''the Pit-Bull's brain never stops growing and eventually it gets too big for the skull and the dog explodes into a fit of rage" which is ridiculous and proven not to be the case. I guess that is a Bully Breed myth wrapped inside a myth! This is insanity! Now lets have some common sense talk, the most basic thought that comes to mind is, "Well, would you expect your Yorkie to snap one day?"

I surely wouldn't expect honest thinking people to believe this myth. The facts about Bully Breed dogs are that they are no different than any pure-bred or rescue dog breed in existence. Even if a Bully Breed becomes aggressive there are always warning signs preceding any type of attack.

This is a myth however that can't be "proven" so-to-speak in the same way that you or I can't prove that a rabbit doesn't talk when nobody is around to listen. Its just more fodder for sensationalist stories that are based on no factual data or evidence to ever suggest otherwise. Getting these truths out in the open will serve well in our fight against Breed Specific Legislation.

PROOF: Aggression in a Bully Breed, or any animal, is never an action in itself, rather it is a reaction to a specific circumstance. Like stated there are always warning signs preceding an attack and even a dog trained to attack first needs a command to engage. Essentially, Pit-Bulls and Bully Breed dogs are a reflection of their owner and the training they have received. Their temperament is a result of genetics and the environment in which they were raised. Whether a mud-blood rescue dog or a "best in show" pure-bred, the facts about Pits are that they cannot just "snap". So if we are talking facts, this is not one of them.

This next Bully Breed myth is of a more general notion but noteworthy still;

"ARE PIT BULLS MEAN?"

This is another one of the myths that flies wildly in the face of common sense, unless of course you believe there is one specific evil breed of dog put here by Lucifer himself to cause chaos and eat people in one gulp. Probably not right?

Even Michael Vick's dogs were able to shed their fighting ways and enjoy the family life.

When it comes to a Bully Breed and its temperament, even a rescue dog is reliably 'par for the course' in keeping with the Pit Bull's natural state of happiness and constant tail-wagging ways.

So if you think Pit Bulls are mean then you better stay away from Lassie;

So Are Pit Bulls Mean? No! Myth Exposed!
PROOF: The American Temperament Test Society is a non-profit foundation established for the sole purpose of creating a uniform temperament test for all breeds of dog.

The assessment? If you think Bully Breeds are mean and vicious then you better stay away from Lassie, a Border Collie who scored 81.2%!

The facts about Pit Bulls are evident and proven. The Bully Breed passes with flying colors as the American Pit-Bull Terrier (APBT) and American Staffordshire Terrier score an 86.4% and 84.2% grade respectively on the temperament test. As you could see if you visited their website, out of the nearly 1,500 dogs tested, the Bully Breed altogether snagged a jowl-dropping 85.3% grade average!!

Furthermore, Bully Breed dogs clearly shatter another myth scoring consistently higher than the entire dog population that received a 77% grade! As they say the proof is in the pudding and another sucker is exposed as just more APBT Bull!

I hope you have enjoyed this article so far. Now this next myth is critical to saving our dogs from Breed Specific Legislation and as you read on you will understand why this kind of 'Pit Bull bull' is so important to set straight.

"A PIT-BULL BITE FORCE CAN BE 2,000 POUNDS OF PRESSURE, PER SQUARE INCH!!!"

Their bite force isn't any harder or stronger of a chomp than other same-sized dogs, that is just more Bully Breed Bull. Actually, it is pretty much impossible to scientifically test Pit Bull bite force for one not-so-obvious reason; You cannot make a dog "bite your very hardest" on cue! There is no way to know if a dog is just 'slacking' or if it is giving it everything he has. Even still, we can conclude the facts to suggest that they definitely do not bite with 2,000 PSI otherwise I wouldn't have fingers to make it through the 'puppy stage' of gnawing and teething. Thankfully I still have 8 fingers and 2 thumbs in which to type about how ridiculous some claims really are

Pit Bull Bite Force Myth Exposed!
PROOF: An excerpt from Dog Bites Information and Statistics Website

"When Brady Barr measured the bite force of various animals for a National Geographic program, a hyena again was measured at 1000 psi pounds of force. A lion's bite force measured 691, a shark 669, and a Rottweiler 328 psi pounds of force. A German shepherd came in at 238, and a pit-bull's bite was measured at 235 psi pounds of force. As far as I can tell, there are no studies of any kind, peer-reviewed or not, showing canine bite force to measure more than the 328 psi pounds of force recorded by Brady Barr. If you know of any, please share."

Another one of the Bully Breed myths exposed! The Pit Bull's bite force is less than the other canine dogs recorded and even though the exact science isn't completely conclusive, it's safe to say the Pit-Bull in this study wasn't such a slacker that he only bit at 235 psi when he is capable of 10 times that amount!

The facts about Pit Bulls are really starting to pile up!

With every one of these myths debunked it proves more and more that their just your usual happy-go-lucky household pup.

"PIT BULLS CAUSE THE MOST ATTACKS, MORE THAN ANY BREED!"

This is one of those 'unquestioned' myths that never gets second-guessed.

The American Pit-Bull Terrier Causes The Most Attacks! Myth Exposed!
PROOF!

The facts about Pit Bulls in an article on the ''Defend Pit-Bulls'' website shows they account for anywhere between 5 and 9.6% of the ENTIRE dog population;

" So, for our example we'll take the average percent between 5 and 9.6, and use 7.3 percent, which would give an average estimation of the Pit-Bull population in the United States. That information leaves us with 5,256,000 APBTs. There are more of them in the United States at 5,256,000, then there are people in countries like; Norway at 4,875,700, Ireland at 4,459,300, New Zealand at 4,363,600, and the list goes on."

So the idea that Bully Breeds cause the most attacks is unfounded. If their the most populated dog your generally going to rank higher on the statistical compilations of dog bites across the country. And even then, that's not necessarily even the case!!!

Indeed, experts in the canine field who rate the temperament of different breeds of dogs conclude that Pit-Bulls have a better temperament than many other common breeds of dogs used as pets, including the miniature poodle and Shih-Tzu.

This next one is a bit far-fetched, I am not sure there is an animal in all of creation that could fit the bill on this one!

"DO PIT BULLS NOT FEEL PAIN?"

Some myths defy logic and some people truly believe our four-legged Bully Breed buddies have some incredible super-powers that enable them to not feel pain. While I tend to agree that their pretty super, the facts about APBTs suggest their powers lay in their ''game'' and not in their sense of pain. That's right, my Pit Bull pups got game!

So what is "game" you ask?

PROOF: GAME. Otherwise known as "gameness" it is a unique quality of the American Pit Bull Terrier, one that makes them particularly special. Gameness is the will-power or determination of a Bully Breed to never give up and never say quit. Essentially, "game" is what we call courage. It is the reason why you hear stories about incredible feats like those of Sergeant Stubby, a Pit with the United Stated Army Infantry Division who served in combat in World War 1. And despite the pressures of direct combat he kept working in service of our country and became a hero.

A Bully Breed dog in responsible hands is capable of miraculous things.

No matter the odds or the difficulty you can bet a Pit Bull is up to the task. Their gameness is an unfortunate reason why they are chosen as fighters. But as positive Pit owners we put their game to good use in weight-pulling and agility events. There are many heroic stories of Bullies accomplishing amazing nature-defying feats because their will-power is unmatchable and certainly unbreakable.

So when you hear Pit-Bull myths like "Bully Breeds don't feel pain" you can force them to man up and see the truth...they feel pain the same as any other dog, but it is their game that other dogs don't have, which enables them to push forward and keep going even when others would give up and quit!

The next myth I hear a lot and I believe we can definitely change this stereotype!

"PIT BULLS MAKE GOOD GUARD DOGS!"

While no one in their right mind would want a pissed-off Pit Bull on its own turf, staring them down wearing a face-mask...Even with a firearm the chances are that you will not be stopping that Bully Breed...Thanks to their gameness!

PROOF! People misconceive the facts about APBTs and mistake possible dog aggression with human aggression. Aggressiveness towards humans is an uncharacteristic trait and historically, Bully Breeds were bred to do many things but being a "guard dog" never really topped the list. Pits are naturally inclined to be passive towards humans and to this day I swear a couple of my "bullies" would've let you break in and snag any item you preferred so long as you rubbed their belly!

In light of the evidence I believe we have established beyond a reasonable doubt that Pit Bulls and Bully Breed dogs are not the mean, people-eating monsters they are made out to be!, I rest my case.

I hope I have done enough to prove the doubters that the American Pit-Bull Terrier is a loving dog, it is inclined to be friendly towards humans. They are sweet, caring, smart and very VERY humorous. So do Pit Bulls make good guard dogs? No! Another myth busted!

We as responsible Bully Breed owners, lovers and advocates must be armed with the facts about Pit Bulls in order to help defeat Breed Specific Legislation and restore the public opinion of our beloved four-legged family members. I am thankful to all who have taken the time to read this and you have a special place in the heart of Pit Bull and Bully Breed pups across the country who we will help, as well as mine.
